Shaul (shaul), KJV twice Saul (so[l). [Heb. Shaul, “asked for.†The name occurs in Phoenician inscriptions, and as Sauli in cuneiform documents.]
1.   A king of Edom, originating from Rehoboth on the Euphrates (Gen 36:37; 1 Chr 1:48).
2.   A son of Simeon by a Canaanite woman (Gen 46:10; Ex 6:15; 1 Chr 4:24), and founder of a tribal family, the Shaulites (shauliÂts) [Heb. Shaulé] (Num 26:12, 13).
3.   A Kohathite Levite (1 Chr 6:24), considered by some to be identical with Joel, an ancestor of Samuel (v 36).
