Rahab, I (rahab), KJV once Rachab (ra-kab). [Heb. Rachab, "broad"; Gr. Rhachab and Rhaab.] A harlot whose house stood on the wall of Jericho. She received the Israelites spies and helped them to escape. For this act of kindness the Israelites rewarded her by sparing her life and the lives of the members of her family when Jericho was destroyed and its population slain (Jos 2:1-24; 6:22-25; Heb 11:31; Jas 2:25). She seems to have become the wife of Salmon and the mother or ancestress of Boaz and thus also an ancestress of King David and of Jesus Christ (Mt 1:5; cf. Ruth 4:21, 22) -- Seventh-day Adventist Bible Dictionary.
