Elizabeth, KJV Elisabeth. [Gr. Elisabet, a transliteration of the Heb. Elésheba, possibly either "my God is fullness" or "my God has sworn."] The wife of the priest Zacharias, and a descendant of Aaron (Lk 1:5), bearing the name of Aaron's wife Elisheba (Ex 6:23). She became the mother of John the Baptist at an advanced age, as an angel had predicted to her husband (Lk 1:5-25, 57). She was related to Mary, the mother of Jesus (v 36), although the two belonged to different tribes. When Mary visited Elizabeth's home in the hill country of Judea, Elizabeth was inspired by the Holy Spirit to address Mary as the mother of the Lord (vs. 39-45) -- Seventh-day Adventist Bible Dictionary.
